In today’s world, it’s harder than ever to maintain academic integrity in higher education institutions. With the development of Large Language Models (LLMs), artificial intelligence (AI) has given students a tool that has seemingly all the answers right in the palm of their hand. However, while AI can support students to make academic tasks more efficient at times, it also risks violating the rules of academic integrity (Balalle & Pannilage, 2025). YuJa Verity helps automate the process of cheating prevention, enabling educators to focus on teaching rather than playing detective.
What is Academic Integrity?
Academic integrity is rooted in honesty, proper attribution, and the ethical acknowledgement of outside ideas and data (Campbell & Waddington, 2024). It encompasses maintaining ethical standards and behaving ethically when doing academic writing, assessments, or work of any kind. The use of AI on an assessment where it’s explicitly or even implicitly prohibited — such as searching for definitions of concepts you don’t remember from class, or outright asking for the answer to an assessment question — constitutes an obvious violation of academic integrity standards.
As noted by Balalle & Pannilage, language models lack the “understanding, critical thinking, or personal insights needed to produce authentic scholarly work.” LLMs hinder students’ learning and development processes as they aggregate existing web content rather than allow students to use critical thinking and analysis skills to come up with their own original ideas.
How Does YuJa Help?
Though LLMs may be used for academic integrity violations, there are plenty of AI technologies that can be used for ethical purposes. YuJa Verity has added multiple AI capabilities, including facial recognition AI and pattern analysis, to not only prevent cheating upon submission, but to stop misconduct before it even starts. The first step is AI identity verification, which YuJa Verity initiates before students even begin their assessments, if the instructor has enabled this feature.
AI ID Verification
With the YuJa Verity v26.6.0 update, AI ID verification has been significantly enhanced to improve accuracy and help stop unauthorized users from accessing proctored assessments. During the Pre-Assessment Check, students use their webcam to capture a photo of themselves alongside an official ID (e.g., driver’s license or student card). YuJa’s facial recognition AI then verifies the match to ensure the authorized student is the one completing the assessment, which demonstrates a proactive approach to cheating prevention.
AI to Detect Patterns in Assessment Data
To detect possible unauthorized collaboration between students for proctored assessments, YuJa Verity v26.6.0 introduces advanced AI-based pattern analysis to identify patterns indicative of potential academic misconduct. These patterns—such as submission timing, IP address, location data, and response similarity across participants—indicate potential cooperation between multiple students on assessments that are supposed to be taken individually, which would be a clear academic integrity violation.
