SUNY has a systemwide agreement that streamlines procurement for all of the system’s 64 institutions.
The institution made the switch to YuJa Panorama from another platform because of YuJa’s rapid innovation and strong customer support.
YuJa Panorama has helped instructors not just fix accessibility issues, but learn how to create accessible files from the start, making it “second nature” as they continue to learn. “If you bring accessibility into a tool like we have, and it’s there at all times, slowly you start to use it and it becomes second nature,” Friesen said.
Once she learned about YuJa’s Video Platform, she said she knew it was a tool the institution desperately needed. The Distance Learning Standing Committee met with a number of video hosting companies, then took part in a trial period to use the Video Platform.
Northshore Technical Community College is one of 12 institutions in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, which provided YuJa Panorama to member institutions.
YuJa Panorama has been integral in making sure we can analyze digital accessibility across our Canvas courses. It doesn’t ensure we do, but it makes sure we can at any time and make changes with a level of efficiency I’ve never seen before.
Both the Video Platform and Accessibility Platform are used widely at the institution by instructors, students, and even non-instructional departments like the CETL and marketing.
Today, the Video Platform is used most for lecture capture and streaming lessons, as well as creating, editing and embedding content into the Canvas Learning Management System.
Faculty and students alike have enjoyed the robust features YuJa offers, from video recording to editing, the ability to create transcriptions, captioning, gradebook integration and video quizzing. “The overall ease of use has been a great strength,” Panton said. “Support and training have been strong as well.”
For instructors, YuJa makes it simple to create engaging videos to improve student learning. “Not all schools can afford to give their faculty members all the tools they need. Fortunately, Parkland places a high priority on helping faculty help students.”
The Video Platform is used at the institution in many ways, including for web capture, recording lectures, uploading videos, and creating video assignments. Auto-captioning, a feature that was not offered with the institution’s previous product, “has saved many hours of work,” Rodgers said. “Users can also search through transcripts and captions, which makes finding things easy.”
MacDonald also uses the YuJa Video Platform to record instructional videos, noting she likes auto captioning and the dictionary. “I really love the dictionary because my name is always spelled wrong, so I’m able to add names to the dictionary and over time it recognizes them,” she remarked. “That means I’m actually spending much less time editing captions because it gets it right on the first shot.”
