How Pamlico Community College Implemented YuJa Panorama to Help Meet the Institution’s Accessibility Goals

Background

Pamlico Community College Seeks an Accessibility Tool

Pamlico Community College is one of 58 colleges in the North Carolina Community College System. Several years ago, the state required institutions to create a three-year accessibility plan. Kathy Mayo, Coordinator of Distance Learning, reached out to other state distance learning administrators to see what other colleges were using to meet accessibility needs.

At the time, all accessibility practices were manual. “We were trying to train faculty on how to create accessible documents, running through checks, and getting adjunct instructors on board,” Mayo said. “It was beginning to get very cumbersome.” Mayo said she was introduced to YuJa Panorama and it looked like a good fit. After a demo, she knew YuJa Panorama would be a great addition to the college.

YuJa Panorama is one product in YuJa’s suite of high-impact media solutions that help institutions deliver accessible, engaging video and media content to users. It enhances accessibility with auto-generation of a number of Accessible Alternatives of course material in the background and provides a visual gauge and real-time suggestions.

Detailed reports at a course and institution level help measure and track accessibility. It also offers users customized website accessibility profiles that can be applied to any webpage and integrates with Moodle, the institution’s learning management system (LMS).

About the College

About Pamlico Community College

Located in Grantsboro, North Carolina, Pamlico Community College began as an industrial education center in 1962. Since then PCC has grown to become a fully accredited two year community college with programs in varied disciplines in academic, continuing education, and cultural enrichment programs. A contract program with East Carolina University enables students in appropriate programs to transfer on for a four-year education.

Since its founding, tens of thousands of students have benefited from the individual, personalized attention the college provides to its students.

Getting Started

Integration of YuJa Panorama Was “Simple and Seamless”

Pamlico Community College offers approximately 80 online courses per semester for students enrolled in distance learning. “When we first began using YuJa Panorama, it was apparent that it was going to be a very valuable tool for administrators, faculty and students. The integration and use of Panorama has been simple and seamless.”

Mayo said that once the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) connection was made, they were up and running with YuJa Panorama. “It is easy to use. There’s nothing extra we need to do. You can determine what’s wrong and fix it using the assistance provided,” Mayo said. “We’re very pleased.”

Instructors quickly learned to use YuJa Panorama to check accessibility and use it to create accessible documents. Students have learned that they can download course materials in a number of formats, from HTML, to electronic Braille, EPUB, audio (speech-to-text), high contrast, tagged PDF files, and more.

Using YuJa Panorama, Pamlico Community College has scanned more than 11,000 files. In addition, over 1,000 alternative formats have been downloaded. In the first quarter of 2023, the institution increased its overall accessibility by 6% over the previous quarter.

Positive Impacts

YuJa Panorama Expands Accessibility for Distance Learning Students

Since implementing YuJa Panorama, onboarding and training instructors has been more efficient. “Instructors can click the report and see how to fix a document,” Mayo said, adding that previous accessibility tools they had tried were limited in function and feedback. “It has saved a lot of time and energy.”

Additionally, YuJa Panorama has helped Mayo conduct course reviews each semester and provide recommendations to instructors. It also has helped the institution meet its accessibility goals. “Providing accessible course content is ongoing, and we will continue to use YuJa Panorama, as long as it continues to serve us in the manner in which it’s working for us now.”
