Introduction

A Growing Institution Committed to Student Success

Chattahoochee Technical College has been serving North Central Georgia since 1963, growing to become a comprehensive institution with over 11,000 students across nine campuses and 50+ program areas. As part of the Technical College System of Georgia, the college focuses on preparing students for both workforce entry and further education. “We want to make sure that we are preparing our students not only to go and be successful in the workforce, but also in this global economy,” said Will Hurst, Director of Distance Learning. “We want to prepare our students holistically to be successful in the workforce or if they decide to go to a four-year institution and complete their bachelor’s or even master’s degree.” The college’s commitment to accessibility and student engagement drives their technology decisions, including their quality enhancement plan focused specifically on engagement in the distance learning classroom.

Introduction

A Sister Institution Introduced YuJa to Chattahoochee Tech

In 2021, Chattahoochee Technical College learned that its existing video platform would be sunsetting. Augusta Technical College, a sister institution of Chattahoochee Technical College, provided an informal demo on how they were using the YuJa Enterprise Video Platform. “And the rest is history,” said Thomas Irvin, Instructional Design Videographer. “We made the switch and have loved using YuJa ever since.” Irvin shared that when the institution learned their former vendor would no longer offer its product, the institution’s Distance Learning Committee reached out to several companies. “YuJa was, by far, the most competitive and the most willing to work with us in transitioning our content to the Video Platform.”

Unified Video Approach

A Solution for Fragmented Video Content

Instructors have been using video tools since they’ve been available, Irvin said. However, before YuJa, the institution faced challenges with fragmented content across personal channels and other platforms, which created issues with content management and accessibility. The college needed a platform that would centralize video resources, help ensure accessibility compliance, and integrate smoothly with Blackboard Ultra, the institution’s learning management system. “We wanted to use something like YuJa to really consolidate everything, and if an instructor leaves, we still have access to that content that we can pass on,” Irvin explained. “YuJa makes it easier to maintain consistent access to important content.”

Feature-Rich Platform

Key Features Enhance Teaching and Learning

From the outset, institutional leaders have appreciated the YuJa Enterprise Video Platform’s comprehensive feature set. “I liked how many features there were, and how it seemed like there was always something new that was going to be added,” Irvin said. Video quizzes, auto-captioning, the ability for students to create their own videos, and the ease of use all helped set YuJa apart. In addition, Hurst said the institution has been working on a quality enhancement plan project. Chattahoochee Technical has decided to focus on engagement in the distance learning classroom. “We want to make sure distance learning students are getting the same type of engagement and resources as traditional classroom students, and YuJa gives us tools that help students and faculty engage with course materials,” he explained. “It’s a great tool to help foster engagement and really get students more engaged with the content.”

Benefits of the Video Platform

YuJa Helps Meet Students Where They Are

At Chattahoochee Tech, we pride ourselves in meeting students where they are,” Irvin said. “Students are able to skip forward to chapters and click keywords if they’re watching a long format lecture.” Faculty in humanities and social sciences particularly appreciate the playback quizzes for engagement verification, Hurst added, while the auto-transcription feature has significantly reduced the accessibility compliance burden. Beyond instruction, YuJa has enabled innovative applications like mandatory program information sessions. “They began using YuJa’s playback quiz option where you can disable fast forwarding,” Irvin said, allowing instructors to ensure students fully view critical content before completing the video.

Expanding Use Cases

Looking Ahead to Expanded Use Cases

Chattahoochee Tech plans to expand their use of YuJa by implementing new accessibility features like audio descriptions. “With accessibility becoming increasingly important, that’s really what we’re going to move forward with doing now that it’s going to be a feature that’s built into YuJa, because we do prioritize accessibility in the college,” said Irvin. Irvin and Hurst said they also anticipate increased adoption across more academic programs and student services as part of their quality enhancement plan focused on engagement in distance learning. Both said they would recommend YuJa to other institutions. “We would 100 percent recommend YuJa for the support provided, the usefulness and utility it offers, and the fact that it is a tool that can help any institution meet the students where they are and bridge gaps and obstacles that may impact student learning,” Irvin concluded.
