Making the Switch to YuJa’s Enterprise Video Platform

Antelope Valley College has been using educational video tools for several years to serve its more than 18,000 students in California’s Los Angeles and Kern counties. When the platform they were using announced it would no longer offer enterprise education video hosting, Dr. Alex Parisky, Instructional Technology and Multimedia Director, and Greg Krynen, Information Technology Services Technical Trainer, were tasked with finding an alternative solution.

Like at all institutions, Antelope Valley College has instructors with an array of technological skills. Some are adept with technology and quick adopters of new tools, while others are less tech-savvy. They wanted a platform that was easy enough to use that every instructor, regardless of their technical prowess, could use effectively.

Usability

Seeking an Easy-to-Use Platform for Instructors and Students

The IT team was looking for a platform that enabled video creation and storage that also provided:

“One of the most important things was finding a platform in which the transition wouldn’t be too shocking for instructors (especially given that the pandemic was ongoing),” Parisky said, noting that he and Krynen evaluated a number of systems. “Once we started exploring, we felt YuJa would be the best tool to meet our needs, and working with YuJa’s team, the transition was seamless.”

“Some instructors use Zoom to capture videos and then import them to YuJa, while others use the web browser capture or the downloaded software capture to record.”

Integration

Integration with Other Ed-Tech Hardware and Software

In addition to LMS integration, YuJa’s suite of ed-tech products works well with Antelope Valley College’s existing hardware and software. The institution has some classrooms with Extron hardware, which YuJa integrates with, and uses desktop software capture as well.

“We have hardware cameras, computers with built-in webcams, full mic systems, and everything ties in nicely,” Krynen stated. “Some instructors use Zoom to capture videos and then import them to YuJa, while others use the web browser capture or the downloaded software capture to record.”

Accessibility

Instructors Use YuJa Differently

Antelope Valley College has about 550 instructors who use YuJa for everything from creating instructional videos to creating screencasts, captioning, chunking content, and for the analytics provided in the dashboard. As a technology trainer, Krynen said he encourages instructors, whether traditional classroom instructors or those who are interested in distance learning, to create videos for their classes.

“Some students learn by visually watching and listening, and creating lecture videos or even videos with key points can serve as a study guide for students,” he said. “When they review the lecture, they often hear things they might have missed the first time.”

YuJa Makes Accessing Content Easy for Students, Enhances Success

Krynen shared that many instructors are giving students video assignments. Students use the YuJa Video Platform to record and caption their assignments in courses such as public speaking, acting, explaining software code, 3D design and more.

Because there are class channels, it’s easy for students to find the content they need. “They click the YuJa link, jump into their class library, and it’s simple to navigate and find content,” Krynen remarked. “Teachers can then look at reports to see where students are pausing and taking longer to view sections, and the tools are there for students to use the content as a study tool.”

Parisky shared that when comparing success rates between students in traditional courses to those in distance (online) courses, online success rates have, in some instances, surpassed those of students in face-to-face courses. “YuJa is an effective tool in our toolkit. Combined with the best practices we employ, YuJa has been an instrumental part of our success,” Parisky said. “We are cognizant of how technology can help our students and staff. If we were chefs and we had to come up with a recipe for success, one of our main dishes would be YuJa. We buy our meat from the YuJa cattle company, and it’s working for us.”

In addition to ease of use, Krynen said he appreciates the intuitive workflows. “I like the simplicity of use, the layout of menus is easy to understand, and it just works,” he said. “YuJa has been a game changer for us.”
