Case Study: How UC Riverside Supports Emergency Remote Instruction with YuJa’s Video Platform

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, officials at UC Riverside (UCR) quickly realized they needed a comprehensive video platform to usher in a new era in online learning. “Out of the pandemic, we realized we didn’t have a proper video platform,” explained Israel Fletes, Director of Academic Technology at UC Riverside’s Exploration Center for Innovative Teaching and Engagement (XCITE). “We had various limited tools to support online learning, but no unified campus wide platform.” YuJa was recommended to UCR by a sister University of California campus, UC Santa Cruz, as Fletes and the Continuity of Instruction workgroup explored various platforms.

While the pandemic was the driver in finding a robust video solution, Fletes said they looked beyond the crisis as they evaluated each solution. Learn how YuJa not only met but exceeded the college’s expectations and facilitated the transition to fully remote learning in the midst of the pandemic.

“We were already looking for a new video partner, but the pandemic sped up our process exponentially, as we had to shift everything online within a few weeks,” O’Hara-Goergen shared. “It was huge because instructors suddenly had to shift gears.”

Case Study: University of Calgary Finds Video and Media Partner with YuJa Video Platform

“Instructors had expressed the need for a video platform for several years, but there wasn’t a campus-wide solution,” explained Isadora Mok-Kulakova, Online Learning Environment Lead at the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Calgary.

In response, institutional leaders formed a Video Content Management Advisory Group with representation from Information Technologies, Taylor Institute, Supply Chain Management, Students’ Union and key personnel from various faculties and units. The group sought a solution that would work in both blended and online learning, that integrated well with D2L Brightspace, allowed single sign-on, and that was easy to use both for instructors and students.
