Introduction

Southeastern Assesses YuJa Among Other Learning Tools

In 2021, Southeastern Oklahoma State University was in the midst of some significant educational vendor transitions and was evaluating various learning management systems (LMSs) and associated integrations. “We had a demo of the YuJa Video Platform in early 2021, and we were really impressed with it in my office,” said Christala Smith, Director of the Center for Instructional Development and Technology (CIDT) at the institution. A demo with the Distance Education Council followed, but because they were launching their LMS evaluation, they weren’t quite ready to lock in a video platform. “But it was in the back of our mind as something we would like to get once we could,” Smith said.

During the demonstration, leaders in the CIDT also learned about the YuJa Panorama LMS Accessibility Platform. “We really wanted the Video Platform, and Panorama was an exciting bonus to discover,” Smith remarked.

Making the Selection

A Committee Compared YuJa Against its Top Competitors

In the fall semester, the LMS evaluation and the search for other tools to include with the transition began. Southeastern hosted an information fair where vendors and their clients were available in various breakout rooms. Faculty could ask questions and complete a feedback survey, which became an essential part of the decision process.

“It was a very thorough evaluation with faculty, staff, and a student representative, and the committee spent a full academic year looking into all the different products and doing demos,” Smith explained. “We had a panel with different people around the state of Oklahoma who used each tool to talk to the committee and answer questions, so it wasn’t just based on a sales pitch.”

After demonstrations and feature-to-feature comparisons, a committee of institutional leaders selected YuJa’s Video Platform and YuJa Panorama to integrate with the Canvas LMS.

Comprehensive Features

YuJa’s Platforms Offer Comprehensive Features

The Video Platform offered many of the faculty’s requested features in terms of video editing, storage, and privacy. Some of their top needs in a video solution included:

Video Editing: Before YuJa, the institution didn’t have a video editor for faculty use, meaning they used various tools independently or didn’t create videos for their courses.

Comprehensive Analytics: Smith added that because many of their instructional videos were hosted on YouTube, the analytics weren’t as extensive as instructors needed, so finding a solution with more robust analytics was essential.

Video Storage: Videos can eat up a lot of storage, and running out of space was a consistent problem with previous platforms.“With every storage solution we had that was an issue, but with YuJa we have unlimited storage,” Smith shared.

Interactive Elements: Instructors wanted the ability to add interactivity to their videos with features such as video quizzing.

While the institution did have an accessibility product before YuJa Panorama, Smith expressed that the solution they had wasn’t as user-friendly and took a reactive rather than proactive approach to accessibility. “Everything had to be created and published before you could see the flag to tell you what needed to be fixed. Everything was always in hindsight,” she said. “Panorama provided all the things we needed. There were no sacrifices (when we made the switch).”

Use Cases

Faculty and Students Use Video and Accessibility Tools

As a whole, 76 percent of students take all of their courses fully online. Anderson noted that a year after implementing the Video Platform, the highest percentage of usage is from faculty creating video lectures, video quizzes, class navigation, and online orientation. Faculty are becoming more interested in leveraging analytics to improve course workflows and add in-video quizzing to course materials.

Accessibility has always been a priority at Southeastern, so much of its existing course content was already accessible. However, instructors use the reports within Panorama to help them understand how their content is accessed. Students are using many of the alternative formats available, and instructors have found them helpful for their needs as well.

Students use the Video Platform tool to create their own videos. “Having a video tool in the LMS right there in the WYSIWYG is really helpful,” Smith remarked. “Students don’t have to find another tool and then figure out how to upload it to cloud storage and put a link in. It streamlines the whole process.”

Simplified Workflows

Instructors Appreciate Simplified Workflows

Because the YuJa Video Platform and Panorama are integrated into the LMS, faculty can easily add video to courses and make them more accessible as they create their course content.

“In Panorama, you have the flag for accessibility in the editing mode, and you can see it adjust in real time as you’re adding content,” Smith said. “While you’re building a course, you can make it accessible as opposed to you thinking you’re finished and then have to work on it again.”

Ongoing Support

Total User Support Has Continued

Southeastern Oklahoma leaders wanted timely and helpful product support. “We also saw in conversations how responsive the YuJa support team was,” Dawn Anderson, an instructional designer at Southeastern noted. “They are always making improvements and keeping us informed of what improvements are coming. It was nice to see a company so transparent and open to change.”

Anderson and Smith agreed that their favorite part of working with YuJa has been the ongoing support. “One of my favorite things about YuJa is the responsiveness of the company. They take everything seriously, care about our opinions and our feedback,” Smith said.

“My experience with YuJa has been really positive for having that responsiveness and feeling listened to,” Anderson concluded.
